Shiva’s help as his son was the one capable of defeating Tarakasura. So they requested the Lord of Love, Kamadeva to somehow make Lord Shiva come out of his tapas. All the Gods assured Kamadeva that they would plead Lord Shiva to forgive his misdemeanor of disturbing Lord Shiva. So Kamadeva shot his arrow of flowers at Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva came out of his tapas and was very angry at the fact that somebody had disturbed him in his tapas. When he opened his eyes he saw Kamadeva and in anger he opened his third eye and burnt Kamadeva. The Holi festival reminds us of this story and many people worship Kamadeva on the day of Holi with the simple offering of a mixture of mango blossoms and sandalwood paste.
