There was a young man called Ajamila. He was a religious and pious person. Somehow due to bad friends he was infatuated by a woman who was exploiting him to get jewels, money and property. Thus he spent many years living with her, begetting many children and committing all kinds of unlawful and sinful acts to maintain his household.
He became old and was suffering from many painful diseases. He felt he may die soon. When he felt he was about to die he remembered all his past and the bad actions that he had done. He felt that he will be severely punished by God and became terribly afraid. In fear, Ajamila used to cry out and call his youngest son Narayana (name of God).
Whenever he called out the name of his son, he found that he felt immediately peace of mind and thought that God has excused him of all his lapses. Ajamila understood that because he cried out the holy name of Narayana even though he was calling his son, he became free from the results of his sins and got relief from the torture of mind.
This story tells us that even at the moment of death if one fully takes shelter in the remembrance of God he will be saved. Ajamila was lucky because in the beginning he was a good man and named his son Narayana. At the time of death our mind would become bewildered and very few would remember God then. Therefore we should cultivate the habit of doing good things and remember God always so
