Page 82 - Moral Stories Vol 5
P. 82

Aprison warden was taking a few prisoners back to the prison from the mines, where they worked during the day. They were heavily guarded so that they could not escape. As they were passing by the sea, the warden’s horse shielded up and threw the warden into the sea. The warden did not know how to swim. There was a high tide and he was in danger of being dragged into the deep waters. None of the other guards knew what to do. One of the prisoners broke free from his guard, jumped into the sea and saved the warden. The warden had been saved by a man he was guarding and taking to the jail. The prisoner, though a criminal, knew what his duty was when he saw the man drowning.
Think and Answer:
1. Where would the prisoners work?
2. What happened to the warden? Why was he in danger?
3. How was he saved? How did the prisoner, as a human, do his duty? 4. What is the moral of the story?
