Whenever the dog barked, the rabbit would get startled1 out of sleep. When this happened several times at night, the rabbit was irritated2. “Why don’t you sleep? What if a wolf comes on hearing your barks? He will finish both of us.”
Hearing this, the dog fell silent. But he became thoughtful. “Why shouldn’t I be friendly with a wolf ? He is, perhaps, a very brave animal.”
Having decided this, the dog left the rabbit and set out in search of a wolf. He happened to come across a wolf and said in an affectionate tone,
Once upon a time, there was a dog. He had no friends. While all the animals in the forest had their
own friendly groups and herds, the dog had none. He lived all alone in the forest.
So, one day he set out in search of a friend. While roaming around, he saw a rabbit. The dog went up to the rabbit and asked, “Would you like to
be my friend?”
Hearing this, the rabbit became thoughtful. “There is no harm in being a friend to a dog. I think I would like
his company”, the rabbit thought.
