Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar always wore traditional Indian attire of a dhoti. He was once denied admission into a club by the gatekeeper as he was not dressed according to the dress code of the club, which was western clothing. He then went back home, changed into a suit and was promptly1 given admission by the same gatekeeper who could not recognise him.
At the dinner in the club, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar kept on talking to his clothes instead of the guests. He even asked his dress to have food. The host and the other guests at the party were bewildered2. “Is this a mad person talking to his dress?” they wondered. He then told them that the gate keeper did not allow him to come inside when he came dressed in a dhoti but allowed him inside when he came dressed in pant and shirt. So he thought that it was his clothes that were invited to the party and not him. That is why he was talking to his dress.
