Many years ago there lived a king who was so fond1 of new clothes that he spent all the money on them. He wanted to be beautifully dressed. He did not care about his subjects at all and was out walking often to show off his new clothes. Sometimes, he had a new dress for every hour of the day and anybody complaining about it would
be thrown in jail in no time.
Everyone was afraid of him and nobody was happy with his rule. Also, there were many courtiers who tried to please him for their selfish interests ánd praised his foolish fondness for clothes. The prime minister was worried about this habit and advised the king many times against it but the king was not ready to listen to him. Finally, he decided to come up with a clever plan to teach the king a lesson and help him come out of this habit. In the great city in which the king lived, there was always something going on; every day many strangers came there from other cities and kingdoms.
One day two impostors2 arrived who introduced themselves as weavers, and said that they knew how to weave the most beautiful cloth imaginable with an uncommon texture and design. And there was more to it - the clothes possessed this wonderful property that they were invisible to anyone who was not fit for his office, or who was unpardonably3 foolish. The king was thrilled to hear this. He ordered them to start weaving these clothes at once and gave them the finest silk, gold and money. He thought that with these clothes he could find out who in his court were unfit for their office or were foolish.
