Nandita kept trying, she spread tidbits every day in the dollhouse. The birds ate happily. But they continued to build their nest over the curtain rod.
Everyday her mother would remove a big pile
of leaves, twigs, straw and other odds and ends
which the two birds brought. One day Nandita thought of an idea. She picked up the rubbish that her mother cleared away from her room and arranged it neatly in the dollhouse. She then waited patiently for the birds to live in this nest that she made. But they didn’t.
Another day while coming back from school she found her friend Deepak throwing stones at birds for fun.
She started to scold him, “What are you
doing? Hurting those innocent birds is no
game!”. Ignoring her, Deepak threw another
stone towards the tree and shouted, “I think I
killed it”. Nandita ran and picked up the injured bird.
She took the injured bird to her home and put it in the straw nest that she built in the dollhouse. She applied some medicine to its injured wings. Soon she heard a chirp and saw that the bird on the curtain was talking to the one in the dollhouse.
The injured bird could not fly for some days so the other birds decided to bring more straw into the dollhouse. Now they realized that it was a good place to build a nest in.
